Andrew Riddle, PhD

As Principal of Site Mitigation, Andrew oversees an experienced team responsible for Stage 3 and Stage 4 mitigation projects across the province, including excavation and avoidance/protection. Primarily responsible for strategic planning, resourcing support, and financial analysis, he also contributes his expertise in stone tool analysis and field process improvement.

In addition, Andrew serves as Chief Information Officer, managing ASI’s data systems and infrastructure, and leveraging his expertise in database design to integrate and disseminate information across ASI and with industry partners. As part of that CIO portfolio, Andrew oversees the Geomatics team who specialize in the broad implementation of GIS and spatial analysis into heritage practices.

Since joining ASI as permanent staff in 2009, Andrew Riddle has served as Project Manager and Senior Project Manager on numerous archaeological assessment and mitigation projects throughout Ontario. These projects included the successful completion of year-round excavations of Indigenous and Euro-Canadian archaeological sites and the protection of sites successfully excluded from development impacts. Most recently, Andrew provides executive-level oversight of the Site Mitigation practice area.

Andrew received his undergraduate degree in Anthropology from the University of Waterloo, specializing in Archaeology. He began working with ASI during his studies in 2002 on site mitigations for the Red Hill Valley Expressway. His doctorate was earned from the University of Toronto, conducting research on stone tool technologies used by the ancient inhabitants of Victoria Island, Nunavut. His research interests also include three-dimensional modelling, archaeometry, site formation processes, and GIS-based data sharing initiatives.

Dr. Riddle lives with his partner and twin daughters in Waterdown, where they enjoy attending community events, nature walks, and wine-touring.
