ASI conducts specialist analyses on human remains recovered from archaeological sites for the purposes of identification and reburial. As cemetery records are often destroyed over time, ASI uses standard bioarchaeological protocols to create an osteological profile of individuals. Sex, age, and any possible pathological conditions are examined carefully in order to provide clues to the identity of the remains and possible links to known individuals buried in that location.
In cases where graves are unmarked or unknown, ASI utilizes these bioarchaeological techniques to understand the lifeways of these individuals and help to identify the appropriate group(s) to represent the remains. Our trained staff biological anthropologists treat all remains with care and respect, ensuring that the wishes of the representatives of the deceased are honoured.
