Monochrome blue is a specific style of hand-painted decoration that is applied using an all-blue palette. For our own classification, we exclude handpainted Asian-style themes from this motif, which we instead designate as Chinoiserie.  The popularity of blue and white ceramics can be traced back to 14th century Chinese export porcelain, but here we see the classic palette being applied to a much more European style of design.

This motif is often found on teaware; it is present on pearlware and early refined white earthenware ceramics.
