Is there anything better than a heritage walk on a perfect summer day?

Ontario’s heritage also lies beneath our beautiful waterways!

Marine Archaeology in Ontario is still an emerging field, scroll through to see the techniques and tools we use to uncover heritage in fresh water conditions.

When people think of underwater exploration, they may often picture scuba diving. In Marine Archaeology however, we can gather most of the data we need without plunging beneath the surface.
Instead, we collect archaeological core samples of the sediment, and we use survey tools such as side scan sonar, magnetometry, sub-bottom profiles, and underwater drones to build a picture of the body of water we are exploring.

Unlike land archaeology, our work in marine archaeology is not governed by legislated Standards and Guidelines. Our methodology is project-specific and determined by our marine archaeologists in consultation with the Ministry of Citizenship and Multiculturalism. Fortunately, our province has a long history of underwater archaeology, which provides us with a wealth of experience to guide each project.

With changing water levels, sites that were on land are now underwater! Here we are doing some core sampling to look for sites that would once have been along the shoreline.

Conversely, some underwater sites are now on land! We found a schooner buried under the former wharf one kilometre inland from the current Toronto shoreline.

These discoveries highlight that Marine archaeology remains an emerging field in Ontario, and advancing technologies are continually improving our understanding of how past peoples interacted with waterways.

We are thrilled to congratulate Dr. Ron Williamson

We are thrilled to congratulate Dr. Ron Williamson on receiving an Honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of Waterloo — the highest honour conferred by the University.

This prestigious recognition celebrates a lifetime of achievement and impact. During the ceremony, Dr. Chris Watts reflected on Ron's remarkable legacy, noting that through the founding of ASI, he helped transform "a fledgling field of Cultural Resource Management into a paragon of heritage preservation."

Making the day even more special was the presence at the ceremony of Ron's wife and partner, Debbie Steiss, and Rob MacDonald, Ron's mentee and successor as President of ASI from 2016-2026.

We couldn't be prouder to see Ron's contributions to archaeology, heritage preservation, and mentorship recognized in this way.
