This session marks the occasion of Dena Doroszenko’s retirement from the Ontario Heritage Trust, where she has held the position of Senior Archaeologist since 1987. The Trust owns or has easements on over 400 provincially significant properties with built heritage that requires continuous maintenance and repair. Thus, Dena has designed and implemented numerous historical archaeological programmes for a diverse range of sites. Often, these have a public education component that satisfies the Trust’s mandate to conserve, interpret, and communicate Ontario’s heritage. Through these projects, she has shared her expertise and mentored countless people who have been hired as field directors, field technicians, material culture analysts, data managers, laboratory staff, and research assistants. Many of these people have remained lifelong friends. Dena is recognized as an authority in historical archaeology as a result of her publications and regular participation in provincial, national, and international conferences. Indeed, she authored the chapter for Canada in the International Handbook of Historical Archaeology and received the OAS’ Tim and Ian Kenyon Award in 2019. The description of the award recipient encapsulates Dena perfectly: “an outstanding archaeologist whose life’s work has been consistently of the highest standard, who has made an exceptional contribution to the development of historical archaeology in Ontario, who has earned acclaim for excellence, and who has inspired others in our province.” The papers in this session will celebrate Dena’s career and present her with a retirement gift that she richly deserves.
