This stone tool is made of black Hudson Bay Lowland chert and is probably from the Middle Woodland Period (roughly 1,500 years ago).
🖤
Archaeologists can tell when people lived at a site by identifying artifacts like this point, that are known to come from a certain place and time. We can also look at the other artifacts found in the same layer of earth and extrapolate their age as well. This method is known as relative dating (which has nothing to do with accidentally matching with your cousin on a dating app)!

Spotted during a heritage assessment was a snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina). As Canada’s largest freshwater turtles, they live as long as 100 years! This sacred animal with its striking BROWN shell was found along the bank of the Grand River.
🤎
Turtles are also central to the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe creation stories. They are knowledge holders and teachers, and serve as eternal timekeepers, with the plates of their shells representing the passage of time.

This piece is made from Refined White Earthenware which is characterized by a bright white appearance that is the perfect canvas for a variety of decorative motifs.

Our Analyst determined this piece was decorated with a transfer print.  This technique involves transferring a design from an engraved and inked copper plate to a thin piece of paper that is then draped onto the ceramic vessel. This method can be used to make many different types of detailed, intricate designs, that can be easily mass produced.

The Grimsby Beach area was a Methodist Campground in the mid-19th century. Transforming into year-round habitation with cottages built between the 1870s and early 1900s.
The modern bright colours of the historic gingerbread cottages have given these homes the name, “The Painted Ladies”.

Pictured here is the historic Monkland Mills, nestled along the banks of the Grand River in Fergus, Ontario. Also known as Wilson’s Mill and now St. Andrew’s Mill, the original structure was built in 1856 and was rebuilt after a fire in 1886. With its striking white façade, this building stands as a reminder of the town’s milling heritage.
